My husband Oscar and I are high school sweethearts, with four beautiful children. Oscar started with the Santa Fe Railroad in 1991 in the Maintenance of Way Department. When opportunity arose, he switched crafts and becamean engineer. He has held many positions with the union and is currently the Local Chairman for Div 839 in northern California.
Growing up, my family has always been a part of the union. My father was a shop steward and taught us early on the importance of workers’ rights and unity. These values, I believe, need to be passed on to our children.
Raising four children in the Railroad life was not an easy task. At times I felt like a single mother. This is why I understand the importance of coming together as a sisterhood to help support each other. As the children got older, I started traveling with Oscar to conventions. This is where I had the pleasure of meeting some of the ladies from the National Auxiliary and became a member at large. A few years later, I organized some of the other spouses in my area and started a local auxiliary, Nor-Cal 39.
Family first has always been our main priority. As the saying goes, “behind every good man, you”ll find a great woman. “ The same is true with the Union. Behind every good union, youʼll find a great auxiliary. United we can achieve great things. I am honored to serve as an officer in my local union and as a national officer in the National Auxiliary.Susie Burrola
